How to clean silver jewelry?

Silver jewelry tends to tarnish after a while of use, and the best way to clean tarnished silver jewelry is to use silver polishing solutions. These solutions have ingredients that remove the tarnish and add a protective layer to prevent it from tarnishing again for a while.

There are many options such as liquid silver polish, and silver polishing wipes. The wipes work perfectly and they are less messy. By simply grabbing the wipe and wiping off the jewelry 4-5 times it will breakdown the formed tarnish and remove it causing the jewelry to shine again.

DIY Silver Cleaning tips and tricks

Most people do not have silver polish at home and need to clean their silver right away, these methods should remove the tarnish, but they will not protect the jewelry from tarnishing again like silver polish does. Do not try these hacks on silver plated jewelry as the excessive rubbing might remove the silver-plated layer.

Baking Soda DIY silver cleaning hack: mix ½ cup of baking soda with ¼ cup of water to make a paste, then rub the paste onto the jewelry and wipe it off with a microfiber. Repeat the process until the piece is clean. For tougher tarnishes, rub the paste on the jewelry and let it sit on there until it is completely dry, then rinse and dry the jewelry with a microfiber towel.

Dish Soap DIY Silver cleaning hack: Mix a bit of Dawn dishwashing soap in warm water. Get a microfiber cloth or a soft cloth, dip it in the solution and rub the silver with it. repeat the process until the silver is shiny again then rinse with water and dry it with another microfiber cloth.

This is a tough cleaning option on jewelry but using toothpaste would work too: get a toothpaste and add a little on a cloth and softly rub the jewelry, then rinse it with warm water and dry it with another cloth. Repeat the process until the jewelry is shiny again.

How to clean gold?

Mix a bit of Dawn dish soap with warm water, dip a soft toothbrush or microfiber cloth in it and scrub the jewelry with it. Rinse with water, dry with a new cloth and repeat until achieving the results wanted. If this does not work, dip the jewelry in the mixture and leave it there for 10-15 mins to soak. Then rinse it with lukewarm water and polish it with a microfiber towel. This should be used on gold products and not gold-plated jewelry. PurlyNude Jewelry does not deal with anything gold plated as they are not hypoallergenic, chip and tarnish fast.

How to clean gems?

Cleaning gems is as easy as cleaning gold and is simply the same method. Mix a bit of Dawn soap with warm water, not hot water. Dip a microfiber cloth in the solution and gently scrub the gem with it. rinse with lukewarm water and dry with another soft cloth. Repeat the process until it is shiny again. Remember, do not scrub harshly, keep repeating the process with gentle scrubs for better end results.
